Is a winter white hamster good for beginners?
January 26, 2010 - I have wanted a hamster for a while now, and I think I have decided to get a winter white. I hear that they, and the cambells, are the tamest of the dwarfs. I know most people think that syrians are the best for beginners, but I don't want a hamster that big. It costs more for supplies. What do you think of winter whites? Do you know of any good care sheets?
Winter Whites are the best of the Dwarfs. If you don't want a Syrian, it's probably best to go with the Winter Whites. Remember, though, they are FAST. Don't try to hug them or hold them even for 5 seconds. However, they do tolerate petting their backs when they are inside the cage. Get a food that has no molasses (they are prone to diabetes), and make sure you have a 6 inch wheel. The ones that say "Dwarf Hamster Size" are inhumane for Dwaf hamsters. Get them a Regular Hamster Size wheel, and it'll be better for their backs. Make sure their cage has at least 2 square feet of space per hamster. I prefer if you connect 2 or 3 Habitrail cages. That's the perfect size for the Dwarf hamsters, and the bars are great as well. The Habitrail bars are smaller than usual, so even Dwarfs can't escape. The Habitrail cages are: Habitrail Playground Habitrail Safari Habitrail Space Station and Habitrail Mini (with Mice- spaced bars). Connect 2 or 3 together with some tubes and you're all set. One thing, though- they can't climb the tubes vertically. Keep the tubes flat. Care sheets? Sorry, but no. Here's a good link though http://russiandwarfhamsters.tripod.com/hams/id1.html
- DWARF HAMSTERS ARE NOT GOOD FOR BEGINNERS!!!! They can be very aggressive, mean, nippy, dirty, and high maintenance. I am also a beginner and I got a teddy bear hamster. I suggest that you get a Syrian hamster which are very sweet and cuddly.
Well I don't agree with the tameness statement. Campbell's hamsters have a reputation of being mean and biting all the time. I have two campbell's and they need constant handling or they'll revert to their wild behavior and need re hand taming. And hand taming is not easy to do with dwarves. They are much more likely to bite than a syrian. Plus, you can easily buy a 10 gallon aquarium which is a great home for a syrian for under $20 and besides that, the costs of the two species is the same. Plus, dwarves are harder to handle for children, more likely to bite, more likely to escape, and they become un hand tame if not handled reguarly. I love my campbell's, and I know it sounds like I'm down talking them but you have to understand their special needs and requirements. Syrians make better pets for sure, but both are easy to care for and you would be able to care for them properly. Keep this in mind, pet stores rarely have hand tame hamsters and you will have to hand tame them which is more difficult with dwarves. Also I've heard that robos are much less likely to bite but harder to handle than winters and campbells. I've also heard that 1) chinese dwarves are good natured and 2) campbell's are the least tame dwarf species. I'm not so sure about winters though, I believe they act very similarly to campbell's and would also be nippy.
- They're good, actually. Go for it.
winter whites are cute. they r easy to take care of. but if you didnt get anything yet. get a rat. they are smarter and they r still easy to take care of. if you change the bedding once a week, it wont smell. they r extremely nice and r way smarter than hamsters. if u want to learn more go here... evergreenrattery.com. and READ THIS: ITS IMPOSSIBLE FOR RATS TO GET RABIES.
